What is the Energy Hub Platform?

Written by Sjoerd Doumen | Dec 16, 2024 1:38:03 PM

Entrepreneurs at business parks face a major challenge: the overcrowded power grid is making sustainability and growth increasingly difficult. How do you still ensure a future-proof energy network? Energy Hubs offer a solution. The Energy Hub Platform, developed within the EIGEN project, plays an indispensable role in this. Read how this innovative system works and what it can do for your business park.

Energy hubs offer an innovative solution for addressing grid congestion at business parks. These local energy networks allow for smarter and more efficient use of the power grid by directly connecting production and consumption of renewable energy. To manage these energy flows smoothly and efficiently, smart control systems are essential. The Energy Hub Platform, developed by Shared Energy Platform (SEP), ENTRNCE and Firan, plays a crucial role in this. This system regulates the matching of energy between participants and ensures optimal exchange of energy and capacity.

How does the EHP work?

An Energy Hub combines various energy management systems (EMS) of participating companies. The Energy Hub Platform functions as the link between these systems. This is done in three ways:

  1. Real-time insight: The platform provides an overview of energy production, consumption and storage at any time.
  2. Smart control: It automatically adjusts energy flows, for example by using battery storage or avoiding peak loads.
  3. Flexibility: Companies retain the freedom to choose their own EMS providers and energy suppliers.

Why is the Energy Hub Platform important for the energy transition?

Net congestion is a major obstacle to the energy transition. Companies looking to become more sustainable or expand are running into grid limits. The Energy Hub Platform  enables better utilization of locally generated energy, allowing:

  • Businesses can become more sustainable faster.
  • Electricity costs decrease due to more efficient use of energy.
  • New entrants gain access to a reliable energy network.

In addition, the platform offers opportunities for solar and wind farm developers. The better distribution of energy and grid capacity will make it easier to accommodate locally generated energy.

The benefits of the EHP

What makes the Energy Hub Platform unique? The key benefits at a glance:

  1. Cost savings: Companies save on electricity by making smart use of renewable energy.
  2. Sustainability: The platform facilitates the transition to a local, sustainable energy grid.
  3. Freedom and flexibility: The system works with various EMS providers and energy suppliers.
  4. Collaboration: Companies work collectively to create a future-proof business park.

The power of collaboration within EIGEN

The Energy Hub Platform is developed by Shared Energy Platform, ENTRNCE en Firan, as part of EIGEN. Within our project, sixteen parties are working together on scalable solutions for Energy Hubs. And like the EHP, all of our products  are made available to all market participants who want to develop an energy hub.

With the Energy Hub Platform  companies get the tools to build smart energy networks together. This makes sustainability feasible, affordable and scalable.

The software that we develop from MOOI EIGEN:
➡️ is not applied by the consortium parties, but by parties in the market who want to offer services to business parks
➡️ so that the wheel does not have to be reinvented and the market of collective EMSs can be boosted.
➡️ and the requirements and wishes of civil society organizations and network companies can be met
➡️ whereby users can supplement this with their own 'proprietary' modules for smart forecasting, smart market trading, smart settlement etc.
➡️ from the principles of OSEI, so as to avoid lock-ins and jointly develop this system with market parties!
